Whether it’s your rise-and-shine meal as you go out to brave the day, or your saving grace in the wee hours after a night of honky-tonkin’, Sun Diner is there to fortify, serving breakfast fare around the clock. Taking its inspiration from the legendary Sun Records, which launched the careers of The King and The Man in Black, the music-themed diner is fittingly housed next door to the Johnny Cash Museum. Fate or fortune—it’s the ideal spot for a 24-hour joint in the heart of Music City.
In creating Sun Diner, TC Restaurant Group partnered with Sun Records to assemble memorabilia. The sunny walls are adorned with all manner of cool photographs of Sun stars, including the Million Dollar Quartet: Presley, Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. (Naturally, they play the tunes to match.) They also tapped into an old school ambiance—retro booths and chrome counter seating, vintage napkin dispensers, and neon signs proclaiming, “Fresh Coffee Hamburgers and Breakfast Served All Day.”
Breakfast is the name of the game, and, in designing the menu, executive chef Tomasz Wosiak incorporates some of the usual suspects, with some decidedly creative ones. You can get tasty eggs cooked to order, with your choice of bacon, sausage, hash browns, and toast, if a classic hearty breakfast is your heart’s desire. For breakfast reinvented, try the Hangover Flatbread. Layered on crisp lavosh are scrambled eggs, bacon, cheeses, green onions, and kettle chips. It’s got a terrific balance of soft, savory elements and salty crunch—and, if you’re in hangover hell, the right combo of carbs and protein to help set you straight.
For a healthier spin, get the Johnny B Good, a flatbread topped with scrambled egg whites, fresh spinach, white cheeses, and pico de gallo. The Donut Breakfast Sandwich that’s made of sausage patty, fried egg, and cheddar tucked in a glazed donut bun may seem crazy—but the meld of savory and sweet works. Crème Brulee French Toast is like a lavish dessert: thick slices of cinnamon bread griddled in a batter made with Rum-chata (a heady liqueur of Caribbean rum, cream, and Horchata) and mounded with whipped cream, candied pecans, and fresh berries.
