When Steven Pearson and his wife, Dorene, and their seven children moved from Pasadena, California, to Franklin two and a half years ago, he had every intention of starting his first coffee shop. 'I lived in San Francisco for over 20 years, so I've always had a passion for coffee on the craft level,” he explains. It was a drastic career changehe'd spent 35 years working in the fashion world with brands like Gapbut he was ready. Dorene, who also worked in fashion design, had already transitioned her career toward home restoration and interior design. The couple combined their talents and dreamed up a beautifully designed space dedicated to all things craft, coffee, and local. High Brow Brew opened in the Westhaven development in April.
'We're trying to elevate the product offerings down here,” says Steven. That's why Counter Culture is their coffee roaster of choicebased in Durham, North Carolina, it was a relatively local option that also happens to be considered one of the country's best. High Brow Brew stocks only organic dairy, and though they don't have a full kitchen, they have filled their display case with café items from area purveyors like Greer's Tennessee Country Hams, Jones Mill Farm, and Lucy's Kitchen. Last month, they started serving lunch with homemade sandwiches and soups from other local vendors. 'We've chosen the best products we can find,” says Steven.
