The 2016 Antiques and Garden Show kicked off a weekend of special events, lectures and book signings with a VIP Preview Party. More than a thousand attendees packed into the Music City Center exhibit hall, marveling at the entry garden designed by Cheekwood's Patrick Larkin and his team. The stone pathway surrounded by spring blooms and southern magnolias complemented a sculptural piece by Steve Tobin, which is now on display at Riverview Gardens at Riverfront Park.
Patrons enjoyed cocktails, attended a book signing for Veramda magazine editor-in-chief Clinton Smith's The Romance of Flowers and received a sneak peek of the collections from more than 150 fine antiques and horticultural dealers. The theme for the event "Landscape of Design" came to life in four gardens constructed throughout the exhibit hall. Cheekwood's "Southern Roots" garden was accompanied by works from Phillipe Chadwick, Todd Breyer and Josiah Lockard, and Gavin Duke and the team at Page|Duke Designs.
The remainder of the weekend included five star-studded lectures and book signings with world-renowned design experts: featured speaker Gwyneth Paltrow and moderator Windsor Smith hosted a discussion on style and their many interior design collaborations; honorary chairman Bunny Williams and Brian McCarthy discussed the influence of the Parish-Hadley design firm in their book Parish-Hadley Tree of Life: An Intimate History of the Legendary Design Firm and were joined by special guest David Kleinberg. Shane Connolly gave a live floral demonstration and talked about his designs at the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and Louis Benech provided highlights from his restoration projects at the Palace of Versailles. Saturday's events culminated in a discussion panel with top design expertsWindsor Smith, Mark D. Sikes, Suzanne Rheinstein and Brian Murphyand moderator Stacey Bewkes of Quintessence lifestyle blog.
