Ways to Volunteer in Nashville

With the holidays quickly approaching, what better way to get in the spirit than by lending a helping hand? Here are some opportunities for serving the Nashville community this holiday season and beyond.

Lending A Helping Hand

Habitat for Humanity of Nashville
Opportunities: Work on a Habitat build site, Teach in a HomeWORKS class, Volunteer at the ReStore
Commitment: Builds last from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; 8 day cycles. For other opportunities, the time commitment varies.
Age Requirements: 16 and up (16-17 must be accompanied by an adult)

Hands on Nashville
Opportunities: Pack disaster relief food boxes, Meal prep with the Nashville Food Project, Help at Thriftsmart Nashville
Commitment: No set time commitment
Age Requirements: 13 and up

Nashville Humane Association
Opportunities: Cat socializer, Dog walker, Puppy socializer, Community events assistant, Pet visitation volunteer
Commitment: One-Time $25 Volunteer application fee; 30 hours of lifetime service.
Age Requirements: 13 and up (13-15 must be accompanied by an adult)

Nashville International Center for Empowerment
Opportunities: Childcare worker, Cooking teacher, English teacher, Administrative volunteer, Citizenship volunteer
Commitment: First-time application, volunteer orientation and placement training; Ask that you track and report volunteer hours. Time commitment depends on volunteer opportunity.
Age Requirements: Not specified, applicants under 18 must have parent/legal guardian approval

Nashville Public Library
Opportunities: Clerical support, Children's tutor, Computer assistance
Commitment: Weekly schedule for a minimum of 6 months.
Age Requirements: 11 and up (11-12 requires parent/guardian to fill out release form)

Nashville Rescue Mission
Opportunities: Serve a Meal, Teach a Class, Tutor a Student, Play with Kids
Commitment: First time application; No time requirement, but many choose to serve on a regular basis.
Age Requirements: 10 and up

Opportunities: Mentoring teens, Prepare meals, Clerical support at front desk, Coffee bar assistant,
Commitment: First time application, interview, code of conduct and background check. They ask that volunteers commit to a three month period, volunteering at least three times a month.
Age Requirements: 18 and up

Room in the Inn
Opportunities: Tutor, Laundry assistant, Winter Shelter assistant, Workforce development assistant, Kitchen & café assistant
Commitment: Volunteer orientation, time commitment varies with opportunity.
Age Requirements: 15 and up (age restriction depends on opportunity)

Second Harvest Food Bank
Opportunities: Culinary Arts Center Volunteer, Disaster Relief Box Assembly
Commitment: First time application; Many projects are one-time projects, some volunteer projects require one volunteer service a month.
Age Requirements: 12 and up for general projects, family-friendly restriction is age 6 and up

Thistle Farms
Opportunities: Cafe volunteer, Shop volunteer, Manufacturing volunteer (Nov 8, 15, 16)
One-time Opportunities: Education Workshop (Nov 13); Brunch & Learn (Dec 13)
Commitment: Many volunteer engagements last two hours; Company encourages consistent volunteers to build trusting, healthy relationships.
Age Requirements: 16 and up
