Fresh off its 35th anniversary, the Tennessee Performing Arts Center is starting 2016 with a bang as it welcomes the Tony-winning smash Matilda the Musical. The latest in TPAC's Broadway series, Matilda tells the story of a very special little girl who has a passion for reading but is also desperate to change her situation. Inspired by the Roald Dahl book of the same name, the performance is a bit darkmeaning grown-ups will enjoy it, too.
In honor of the production, TPAC has partnered with the Nashville Public Library Foundation in support of their Summer Challenge program, which provides books to kids in need. Audience members can contribute by donating new children's books in exchange for a future discounted ticket. The arts-focused nonprofit will also be holding an essay contest for grades five through eight, giving students an opportunity to write about a teacher who's impacted their lives for a chance to win four tickets to the showplus two tickets for their favorite teacher. In addition, TPAC's ¡Bravo! initiative is setting up a meet-and-greet with cast members for the YMCA Latino Achievers.
Meanwhile, leading up to the premiere, you'll also spot community leadersincluding new TPAC board member Eddie George as well as Channel 5 cohosts Meryll Rose and Lelan Statomshowing their support on social media, striking a Matilda pose.
