When Nashville became big enough to take on not one but two professional sports franchises, we were impressed. When it paddled its way, one outstanding independent restaurant at a time, out of the culinary backwater it had been for decades, we were elated. When it bypassed the trap that is urban sprawl and infilled its urban core with small businesses and gleaming highrises, we were inspired. But what really made us register that Music City has finally become a major metropolitan player wasn’t one single thing that happened here so much as the multiple things that didn’t happen elsewhere—as in shopping trips, to other cities.

Store by store, site by site, Nashville and its surrounding areas have become a legitimate shopping destination, a fact that we, as a city, are taking full advantage of. Between independent area retailers whose success proves we can support a thriving market to high-end national powerhouses whose very presence solidifies our arrival, Nashvillians no longer have to arrange a trip to Atlanta every time they want to find something unique for their homes or to round out their closets.
OK, admittedly, what’s exciting for some is maybe a little less so for others, but whether you embrace shopping or abhor it, there’s no denying that every once in a while, you have to do it. And isn’t it nice to know you don’t have to leave town to get what you want?
