When she’s not working and has a bit of free time this holiday season, Carrie Underwood might just be power shopping at The Mall at Green Hills. “If I’m in a hurry, that’s the place to find the most concentrated amount of good stuff. If I have more time, I might browse the other great small shops around town,” she says. But with a schedule like hers, you’re more likely to catch sight of her on stage, performing or hosting the upcoming CMA Awards show. As if she doesn’t have enough to her credit, the trail-blazing superstar has also earned the 2009 Harmony Award, to be presented at the upcoming Symphony Ball. As reigning entertainer of the year, this recognition is certainly deserved, but it’s not something Carrie takes for granted.
Presented annually at the white-tie affair to an individual that demonstrates a continued interest in and support of music in Nashville, she joins previous high-profile recipients including Amy Grant, Rascal Flatts, Lyle Lovett, Tony Brown and Martina McBride—among others—in accepting this accolade. “It means so much to me, because I truly feel at home in Nashville, and it’s wonderful that my community is honoring me with such a prestigious award.”
When talking about the treasured musical edifices within the city, she notes the Schermerhorn Symphony Center as a favorite, after having the opportunity to perform there as a tribute to Randy Travis. Other favorite music venues include the Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Ryman Auditorium and even the legendary Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.
Her love for all things music is likely why fans so identify with and adore her. Well, that and her unbelievable vocal range and dedication to her craft. The first hit from her new album, Play On, is “Cowboy Casanova,” and just like her previous record, there’s no doubt that other hits will follow.
Since winning American Idol, Carrie Underwood has been an artist to watch, and she’s carved her own path in the music industry. Sales of her releases have broken a number of records, and her mega-hits have sold millions of albums. With unforgettable recordings and videos to her credit, including “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Last Name,” “All-American Girl” and “Just a Dream,” Carrie has become one of the genre’s most recognized voices—and faces. Play On is likely only going to increase that impact....
