Diminutive lofts carry powerful punch

Even the smallest loft can seem spacious with a bit of imagination and thoughtful design.

According to designer Jonathan Pierce, interior design starts with a dream. He takes it from there and can bring most any vision to life by creating a tapestry for his clients. The former lead designer for CMT’s Ultimate Country Home series is now one of the most sought after talents in the market, and from what we’ve seen, will continue to rise in demand and popularity. While Pierce has extensive experience in decorating large estates for some of the city’s most famous faces, his creative ability doesn’t require an abundance of square footage. Because of his artistic vision and extraordinary expertise with interior spaces, he can take even the smallest living space and make it appear larger than life.

Underneath all of his ideas is a simple understanding that Pierce does design for himself, but more importantly for his clients. His philosophy is to be certain that each project reflects and resonates and speaks about the owner or resident.

During a recent downtown home tour, we were immediately drawn to several of the units that he and his team from Pierce and Company had put together. The first being a simple one-bedroom (practically a studio) flat and the second the personal loft inhabited by NFL veteran Albert Haynesworth. In both cases, the interior concepts were impressive on several levels and for completely different reasons. From the home of one of the NFL’s brightest stars to a studio for one, Jonathan Pierce takes design inside ICON in The Gulch to a higher level – literally.

When creating a haven for Haynesworth, Jonathan and his team were given free reign. They considered key factors prior to getting started, but took basic requests to a higher level within only a few weeks. From this client, they took minimal direction. Haynesworth wanted oversized furniture that would accommodate he and his friends and a comfortable living environment. The team delivered this and then some. Pierce reworked the entire loft to incorporate all of the bells and whistles that an NFL player would want (such as a gigantic 67-inch flat-screen television, Bose surround sound and other electronic advances), while also incorporating natural finishes, geometric patterns and neutral tones throughout the loft. They installed slate tiles on a staggered joint and on the living room columns and in the kitchen to create the illusion of height and warmth, which also allowed the cabinets to stand out. This tied the two rooms (totally open) together while also providing a focal point to build upon. In the living room, the team completed the modern but rustic look with a large sectional sofa from Hickory Chair with Donghia accent pillows and paired it with a unique cadillac chair by Andrew Martin International of London and solid mahogany side tables. A room-sized Tibetan rug and modern Calligaris entertainment unit are complemented by the gorgeous landscape oil painting by local artist Adam Hall....
