Pool Party Perfection

Lee Seelig turns his Brentwood pool and water feature into something incredible

Drive around any Brentwood neighborhood development and you’ll find all kinds of houses with sprawling yards—often full of children having fun. A number of these yards have pools to compliment the family-friendly abodes. Waterscapes Backyard Resorts owner Lee Seelig purchased a typical Brentwood home off Concord Road a couple of years ago, and set out to renovate the basic-but-spacious house into a much more appealing space for his children and very large extended family to truly enjoy. While the house is equipped for major entertaining, including an outdoor kitchen, outdoor living area, a theater room and the bunkbed room (so that the kids can all hang out together), the absolute centerpiece of the home’s extraordinary and enormous transformation has been the addition of a pool the likes of which you’d normally expect to find in an upscale mountain resort.

For many years, Seelig has designed and installed pools for some of the Nashville area’s most well-known business executives and a fair number of celebrities. So, when he had the opportunity to create a pool for his own large family, he put in all the bells and whistles. Finished almost a year ago, the pool has been a huge hit with everyone who’s had the pleasure of being invited over for a good time.

Some of the pool’s components include 10-foot- high diving cliffs, a 106-foot-long water slide—including a deep pool to accommodate those activities—plus a waterfall and a more shallow pool for lounging, so that the adults can take in the fun as the kids play. Actually, one of the “kids” who enjoys the water slide most is Seelig’s brother-in-law Tommy Heathcock (who happens to be 56 years old and 6’ 4” tall). Seelig appreciates the humor in seeing his fellow grown-up line up for his turn to go down the slide amidst a cluster of 5-year-old kids, but “he loves it,” Seelig says. “It’s great to sit in one of the chairs that we’ve positioned in the shallow area and watch the expressions on everyone’s faces as they come out of the shoot at the bottom of the slide.”

When I ask what Seelig's own favorite part of the pool is, he says “That’s like asking which child you like best.” He tells me his daughter Abbey likes the water slide, his son Chance’s favorites are the waterfalls and the cave and he likes the days when “the pool is in full swing, and I see 50 to 60 kids and adults enjoying themselves.”

As someone who’s seen the pool in person, I can attest that it really takes awhile to take it all in. Everywhere the eye turns, there’s something exciting, interesting and extremely inviting. All of Seelig’s staff had a hand in the creation of the area, including his son, who can boast about helping set the enormous boulders that are strategically placed around the perimeter. Bill Hewitt of Hewitt Landscape installed the plantings, which complete the look. The liberal use of evergreens keeps the area looking attractive year-round, and definitely makes visitors to the property feel they’re not in Nashville, but in the Colorado Rockies....
