Great summer escapes just a car ride away

By Stacie Standifer • May 1, 2009

When the weather gets warmer, we all get the urge to make the most of our weekends. Sometimes the very best escapes don’t require extensive planning in advance—some of the most fun trips are those we take on a whim, involving nothing but packing a small bag and jumping in the car. All you need is a great relaxing destination to explore, and you’re all set for the perfect summer weekend escape.

Atlanta

There’s no doubt this sprawling city has been on your road-trip radar for some time. In fact, it’s the favorite escape for a number of Nashvillians. There are so many things to do during the summer, including the outstanding concerts and festivals that make “Hot-lanta” even more popular this time of year. But on a recent visit, I found a number of entirely new reasons to make the trek down I-24. If you haven’t visited the city in awhile, it’s time to go back, as new entertainment options are making it more desirable than ever before.

Perhaps one of the top reasons to go now is to experience the accommodations at the recently completed Mansion on Peachtree. This Rosewood Hotel and Residence is now open and gaining rave reviews from travelers in search of perfect luxury in the area’s most desirable location.

Towering above all the other buildings in Buckhead, this soaring high-rise property is equally impressive inside. From the gorgeous lobby and grounds complete with English gardens to the chic lobby and restaurants, the entire property is designed to both pamper and wow visitors with its attention to detail and its superior surroundings. Located within walking distance of the best shopping in the South, The Mansion is quickly becoming a favorite for serious shoppers. Within steps, guests can be inside either Lenox Square or Phipps Plaza, both well known for their upscale department stores and chic boutiques. Actually, there are so many options and stores, that you might need help from the concierge to navigate the choices and narrow your search—allowing ample time to actually enjoy the grounds and services of the hotel, which are beyond impressive.

The love affair with The Mansion on Peachtree may start with the lobby, but definitely resonates in the actual rooms and suites. One thing I particularly enjoyed—something you don’t find in most high rises or metropolitan luxury hotels—was the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking views from my suite’s private balcony. While each room’s interior offers every possible indulgence and modern convenience, having a bit of personal outdoor space was a bonus.

If you haven’t visited a Rosewood development before, you’re in for a treat. For those familiar with their other locations, rest assured that this one is just as inviting and impressive as the other hotels and resorts. Along with the meticulously designed individual accommodations, the classic Old Hollywood grandeur extends to the gathering areas on site, including the acclaimed restaurants NEO and Craft Atlanta. (You won’t want to leave without a visit to each.)

Another favorite place to unwind at the end of the day or to enjoy a bit of music and nightlife is The Mansion Bar. This hip (but not trendy) watering hole draws a power-player roster of Atlantans while also serving as the center of entertainment for out-of-town guests. Award-winning cocktails and gourmet bar food served in a sleek-but-comfortable atmosphere are all part of the mix in this hotel hot spot.

While unwinding here is an excellent choice, it definitely isn’t the only potential option. In fact, one of the hotel’s most desirable amenities is the signature 29 Spa. It’s getting national attention for both its design and array of original treatments for body and spirit. The spa is one of a kind, and the creation of Atlanta resident Lydia Mondavi (she’s married to Rob Mondavi, whose family is known for the famed Mondavi Winery in California’s Napa Valley). Named after the world-famous wine-growing region on Highway 29 in the Napa Valley (also the moniker for her cosmetics line, 29), the spa takes great inspiration from Napa and wine culture. They even incorporate the benefits and anti-aging properties of the grape seed into an exclusive line of products and treatments to improve and renew the skin—and the soul. No matter what your schedule is while in town, at least one visit to 29 Spa should be at the top of your list. Chances are, you’ll want to linger and enjoy multiple services, so consider this when planning your day.

And, if you want to experience some other things away from the hotel, I do have some suggestions. Dining enthusiasts will want to hit Midtown for a visit to my favorite restaurant, Park 75 at Four Seasons. Another new favorite is MF Buckhead, an upscale sushi sensation within walking distance of The Mansion’s entrance, and not to be missed. Of course, there’s much more to do than eat and shop while you’re in town. I found the most up-to-date and reliable source for what’s happening in and around Atlanta to be the 50 Things to Do option found on www.atlanta.net. That’s one site you’ll want to browse before your trip. If you don’t have time to make arrangements, don’t worry, as the concierge staff can take care of everything from transportation to tickets.

With the incredible rooms and convenient location, I envision The Mansion on Peachtree as the ideal destination for couples in search of a romantic escape. But, with the shopping, spa and dining, it’s also the optimum choice for those planning a girls’ getaway. You might find a weekend in the city so enjoyable that you’ll want to come back often. A tour of the residences on the top floors definitely had me thinking about that possibility, and it’s one within reach for a select few.

Greenwood, Mississippi

I’m sure when most people see the name of this destination, they’re thinking—“where?” A few months ago, I found a true Southern escape in one of the South’s most under-explored and undisturbed cities. Greenwood is a well-kept secret among discriminating travelers for a number of reasons. Located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, it’s an undiscovered paradise that includes upscale accommodations, dining, shopping and Southern culture. This is a longer drive than some potential destinations, but definitely one that’s more scenic after you pass through Memphis. The city’s tourism and visitors website (gcvb.com) is filled with information, not only on getting there, but what to do when you arrive.

In my case, I got a very personal journey with one of the area’s most prestigious and hospitable resident families. Starting with a ride down in their private plane, I joined the Malouf family for a two-day tour of all that Greenwood extends to its visitors—and more. If you’ve been to John-Richard furniture in Belle Meade, you’re familiar with some of the outstanding line of furnishings, lighting, botanicals, art and mirrors that this interiors company specializes in. But, you’re likely unaware of just how large the operation behind this tasteful showroom actually is. Before being hosted by Alex and Pat Malouf on my trip to Greenwood, I was completely unaware of the international presence that their Mississippi-based manufacturing and design operation truly has. A tour of their facilities could take several days, although we packed it into one so I’d have the chance to experience other aspects of the city. What I discovered while there was that their company continues to flourish and gain attention from designers due to the impeccable quality and craftsmanship applied to all that is John-Richard.

While my hosts were clearly proud of their incredible company, they were equally delighted to showcase the city where John-Richard was born. And, I can say that I was beyond impressed with all that this quaint town had to offer.

Another major brand headquartered here is Viking—as in, all things kitchen. Not only is this where appliances and culinary wares are manufactured and designed, but it’s home to the Viking Cooking School that draws thousands of culinary enthusiasts and chefs each year (www.vikingcookingschool.com).

When driving into Greenwood, it’s difficult to grasp that what appears to be nothing more than cotton fields is home to two internationally recognized luxury brands, but that’s the case, and it’s inspired the city to accommodate visitors in a way you wouldn’t expect to find in a small Mississippi town.

Built in 2003, the Alluvian Hotel is a cosmopolitan refuge for those seeking both warmth and luxury. Gorgeous interiors and every possible convenience are available in the heart of the historic downtown area, just steps from the cooking school and quaint shops and restaurants. As a part of the Viking Hospitality Group, their staff works to ensure that every guest has an enjoyable and memorable stay.

The rooms were surprisingly plush, rivaling those you’d find in the most upscale hotels in major cities. A stylish bar leads to Giardina’s Restaurant, where fine Italian dining meets Southern comfort. They take food seriously here, and you’ll want to experience all the local specialties. The hotel can make suggestions based on your taste and time-table. Guests also come to the hotel for The Alluvian Spa. At over 7,000 square feet you could easily spend an entire weekend without leaving this relaxing and serene space that extends a variety of treatment options to soothe visitors daily. But, as tempting as it may be to stay in the spa, you’ll want to jump back into the car so you can explore the Delta and the nearby boutiques—filled with merchandise and furnishings not found elsewhere.

The people are as welcoming as the attractions, and the entire atmosphere is one of complete relaxation and comfortable entertainment. In many ways, a visit is a step back in time, as Greenwood has a number of historical and cultural attractions that you’ll want to explore. While not everyone will be as fortunate as I was to be hosted by the Malouf’s, chances are you’ll find that a trip here will be like visiting relatives in the country—but with a much better room.

Other Escapes

If you’re looking for other ideas before packing the car, here are a few you’ll want to consider. Some are close, others a bit further away—but each one can provide a weekend (or a week) of summer fun.

Golfer’s Paradise—Greensboro GA
Just 75 miles east of Atlanta, you can escape to the Ritz Carlton Lodge at Reynold’s Plantation. The course and hotel are positioned to maximize the views and water challenges provided by the beautiful Lake Oconee.

Jump In—Smithville, TN
Within a very short drives is Center Hill Lake, one of Tennessee’s most gorgeous and popular lakes. In the summer, lake-side eateries such as (my favorite) Sweet Water Grille, open up to serve fare to fishing and skiing fans, as well as those just relaxing on the water. House and pontoon boats are available for rent, and there are some excellent private homes and cabins large enough to accommodate larger groups.
